TB HIV Care (THC) is a South African non-profit company dedicated to preventing, finding and treating TB and HIV. The organisation was originally founded in Cape Town in 1929 to provide TB patients and their families with social support. With the advent of the HIV epidemic, TB HIV Care expanded its pioneering community-based support for TB treatment to include support for people living with HIV.

Currently, TB HIV Care is an internationally recognised organisation that has conducted more than two million HIV tests, supports hundreds and thousands of people to access TB and HIV treatment, and has a system for providing healthcare to vulnerable populations that is considered a model of best practice.

In October 2017, TB HIV Care shifted from a non-profit organisation (NPO) to a non-profit company (NPC) and adheres to the high standards of accountability and transparency as laid out in the Companies Act of 2008.

Our Mission:

To empower and care for communities by supporting primary healthcare services to:

  • Prevent TB, HIV and other major diseases
  • Improve diagnosis, treatment, care and adherence support for people infected and affected by TB, HIV and other major diseases
  • Build capacity of individuals and organisations to provide optimal comprehensive primary healthcare including TB and HIV services
  • Participate in operational research, monitoring and evaluation to improve comprehensive primary healthcare

Our Activities:   

 TB HIV Care’s activities currently comprise of the following:

  • HIV testing and counselling (HTC), linked with screening for TB and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in communities, health facilities and correctional centres
  • Management and implementation of biomedical solutions such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
  • Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC)
  • Community-based HIV/TB prevention, screening and adherence support
  • Advocacy, communications and social mobilisation
  • Training, including clinical training, community health worker training, training on TB/ART adherence support
  • Providing specialised services to key and priority populations:
    • Delivering an age appropriate comprehensive package of health services to young women and girls, inclusive of HIV testing and counselling (HTC), family planning, contraception, pre-exposure (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases
    • Delivering comprehensive health and social services to sex workers
    • Offering inmates in correctional services TB screening (including X-rays) and HIV testing and counselling
    • Supporting people who inject drugs (PWIDs), through the implementation of a “harm reduction” approach

  • Eastern Cape (OR Tambo district, Alfred Nzo district, Buffalo City, Sarah Baartman district, Amathole district, Chris Hani district, Joe Gqabi district and Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole)
  • KwaZulu-Natal (uMgungundlovu district, Harry Gwala district and eThekwini Metropole, Ugu)
  • Mpumalanga (Ehlanzeni district, Nkangala district, and the Gert Sibande district)
